Doing home-based work does not always turn out to be the ideal that you imagined it to be. The very fact that you are at home puts in your path many distractions that can divert your focus. And as you know when you are using the Law of Attraction you need to focus on what you want, not on what you don’t. Be careful to identify the things that you do that distract you and drain your energy – so that you can change what you do! First you have to make sure you are not overly focussed on your work. It is great to get rid of the commute, sack your boss, work flexibly and get to go to your kids’ sports days and concerts. You want to create a life of abundant wealth, which includes a lifestyle where you are not a slave to a job. The danger to be aware of is that instead you become a slave to you start-up business.

For one thing you want to ensure that you home-based work does not take over the whole house!! It needs to be in a place in your home where you can put it down, walk away, and leave it. Otherwise there is always the temptation to keep on doing something and going back to it. Not only do you need downtime, but other members of your family want your presence and full engagement with them. Watch out for becoming too hard working! Applying the Law of Attraction is more about how you think and feel rather than the amount of work you do.

Time Wasters and Energy Drainers

The other side of home-based work is the distractions that either waste time or lower your energy levels. There are many activities that you may enjoy to unwind and relax. I am not saying you have to give up everything you enjoy, but certainly start to look at in the context of what you want to achieve. Remember like attracts like, so if you are focussing on things that are not helping to raise your thinking, your vibrational level, then you will be less effective in the deliberate attraction of the good things you do want. If you are a work-at-home-mom you may laugh at the suggestion that there is any spare time in your schedule to accommodate any extra home-based work, or money in the budget for the business expenses. But look carefully at how these things might affect you.

Consider some things that might take up your time unproductively…

  • Surfing/Social networking without a purpose. The internet is a great power for good, but it can also be a distraction. Use it wisely, but switch off if you are being distracted from your purpose. The internet again is great for keeping in touch with friends and loved one, but can it become a master rather than a servant.
  • Newspapers/Watching news on TV. The media loves bad news. If you cannot read or watch without internalising it then avoid it. Try going a week or even a month without getting your daily “fix”. You will be amazed that your life still goes on. It does not stop just because you don’t know about the latest political argument or tragedy. If there is something that does affect you, you will soon find out about it.
  • Trashy Novels/TV Soaps. These can be seen as light entertainment and relaxation. But it takes up a lot of time to keep up with the goings on of imaginary people in imaginary situations.
  • Film & Book Dramas and Tragedies. The drama is supposed to draw you in and get you emotionally involved in situations that can be disastrous and tragic. If you are empathising strongly with the hurt, pain and grief of the characters then how is that affecting your vibrational level?
  • Gossip Of course you want to keep up with how your friends and family are doing, but is a polite enquiry and catch-up the same as going into the ins outs if “She said – he said – she said…!”. Gossip usually focuses on the negative aspects of someone’s character or actions and so has a knock on effect on your own energy, as well as taking up time you can use more positively.
  • Commuting Although we have been looking at distractions from home-based work the same things affect your energy and ability to perform in any situation. The commute can be an added energy-drainer if you focus on crowded late trains or traffic jams. Look at it as time you can think your own thoughts or read and listen to uplifting material.

We All Have 24 Hours a Day…yet some people accomplish so much more than others each day – something you are sure to have noticed at your job!

People watch an average of 4 hours TV! Add to that the time reading newspapers, gossiping and surfing and you could easily lose half of your waking hours to activities that are not just unproductive and waste time, but actually drain your energy, lower your vibration and make you less likely to attract positive results.

If you are building a business which involves training and helping others then the organizational leadership training begins with you. If your home-based work is on top of a day job and other responsibilities, like looking after your family, then you need to use your time effectively and do what you can to keep you focussed.

You can view your commute on a train or bus in a positive way. Use it to read good personal growth success literature or motivational training books. In your car you can play affirmations, or you can listen to them on an MP3 player instead of looking at the other hang-dog faces and road-rage victims.

You can use the internet to find material or courses that are inspiring and edifying. If you do find yourself in conversation about someone then find their good points to focus on – however hard that may be!! Of course you need to balance your life, which means having enough relaxation time to keep you fresh. You need social interaction – some people need more than others, but spend a week noting how you spend your time. See what you have to give up to do your home-based work. You may be surprised at what keeps you “busy” and what you can change.
