Hashimoto’s is the most common cause of sudden onset hypothyroid symptoms in the United States beyond the age of 6. It is often not tested for because the treatment for Hashimoto’s is the same as the treatment for ‘regular’ hypothyroid conditions. But there is a huge difference.

With Hashimoto’s, the reason you are having symptoms is because your immune system is attacking the thyroid enzyme thyroid peroxidase or the protein that transports the thyroid hormone, causing a combination of both hypo and hyperthyroid symptoms.

Symptoms of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis include Myxedematous psychosis, weight gain, depression, mania, sensitivity to heat and cold, paresthesia, fatigue, panic attacks, bradycardia, tachycardia, high cholesterol, reactive hypoglycemia, constipation, migraines, muscle weakness, cramps, memory loss, infertility and hair loss.

If this condition is treated with only thyroid medication, without addressing the immune system, symptoms will continue.

Traditional medicine handles autoimmune with steroids. Steroids are usually prescribed at low doses for short periods of time. During treatment patients may experience some relief of their thyroid symptoms. However, they typically trade one set of symptoms for another. Some of the common short term side effects of steroids are facial swelling, ‘breaking out’ over the face, chest and back and mood swings. And this ‘relief’ is temporary.

Steroids work by suppressing the immune system, making you more susceptible to colds and flu’s and other illnesses. Not really a good trade-off.

But you can modulate the immune system without medicine or the side-effects of medicine. The first step is to find out what is causing your immune system to attach your own body. This requires special tests that aren’t covered by insurance. Then, once the culprit is found, avoid or eliminate it. Yes, it can be certain foods such as gluten, dairy, soy, yeast etc. So you will have to eliminate whatever is causing your problem. Lifestyle and nutritional changes are a must if you want relief of your symptoms.

This is important because, not only can your immune system attack your thyroid, it can also attack your pancreas (diabetes), myelin (MS), intestines (Crohn’s) joints (rheumatoid arthritis), uterus (endometriosis), stomach (pernicious anemia) or spine (ankylosing spondylitis).

Auto-immune conditions are becoming more common today with all the GMO (genetically modified food) and environmental pollutants. And modern medicine’s only answer is steroids.

A better long term solution is to find the cause, eliminate it and modulate your immune system with vitamin D, glutathione and other natural vitamins and supplements.

If you have Hashimoto’s there is hope but you have to be willing to pay for special tests, be willing to make some lifestyle and or nutritional changes and understand that it is going to take some time to repair the damage that has already been done to your body.
