In general, your emotional state is dependent upon how well equipped you are to deal with setbacks on an emotional level. Even people who appear emotionally stable have, at some time or another, suffered from emotional difficulties. If you feel that it is difficult to deal with the way the world is, you are not on your own! There are numerous ways that negative emotions are produced simply because of the very nature of being human and caring about what occurs on this planet.

What is it that gives us our emotional strength and mental well-being?

Our emotional health is well documented to be only partially attributable to genetic and/or hereditary factors. However, upbringing and past experiences play a very large part in it. Our current lifestyle, the home, work and social environments which we frequent also play a large part in our emotional condition.

When you encounter emotional problems, there are a number of people who can help you by simply talking with them. In too many cases, people bottle up their emotions from others when sometimes all we need is a friend who can be there for us. Also remember that neither drugs nor alcohol are a solution. They both make things worse in spite of what the people selling them may tell you!

When things get completely on top of you, you need to determine whether or not you are taking on too much in your life. Try to keep focused on your priorities. It can be tempting to try to take on more and more things as a way of trying to forget about feeling low. But this is a self-defeating course of action. Be particular in choosing the extra activities you take on. For example, only indulge in those activities that are pro-survival for you and those that do not conflict with any other goals you may have.

If there is one thing you should remember when it comes to emotional well being, it is “Balance”. Balance means having all of the important parts of your working together in harmony. We each have a different concept of balance, because we have our own individual lives. Your sense of balance may change at different times during your life. For example, you may work longer hours than others, but if it gives you the financial rewards that you desire then you can still feel stable and balanced.

However, when we are not feeling balanced the slightest thing can tip us over the edge. Once we become overwhelmed we are unable to make or take the best decisions. The secret to balance is to remain in control of yourself and your goals, and to keep moving towards them.

Think carefully about what is important to you in terms of balance and stability. Choose worthwhile goals and work towards them.

Also, try not to be too materialistic. Trying to keep up with your neighbours, peers or anyone else for that matter can make you feel under pressure to procure enough money just to buy material goods. Is it ever worth it? We all like nice things but again, balance is the key. So never underestimate the importance of it in your life.

Positive thinking also plays a very large role in our emotional well-being. Whilst negative thoughts can lead to illness and disease, positive thoughts promote good health and well-being. It has frequently been found that we underestimate the power of our own minds and by learning a few simple thought techniques we can make a huge difference to our lives.

Thinking positively and getting the right balance will improve your quality of life immensely – and don’t lose sight of the responsibility you owe to yourself to do this and thereby become your own best friend!

This you do by spending a little time on yourself, to know where you are, where you want to be and how you are going to get there. But to keep the right balance you should also consider those near and dear to you.
